There are lots of really cool storage thingies out there, especially at Pottery Barn and Container Store. What kind of space are you trying to organize? Is this a built-in desk area, or just counter space in the kitchen, or what?

I like that it has dividers on the inside for stuff. You'd easily be able to store your checkbooks, stamps, address book and business cards there.
Some kind of
paper organizer tray might be good for dumping mail, and you could separate bills with one of those stand-up
letter organizers.
