Hey Suzi! Last year I did the Mystic Tan! It wasn't bad! It was the machine that sprayed you front and back (twice I believe) and it was pretty realistic. Nothing too DRAMATIC and it was clean, sanitary and they gave you a hair cover and stuff.
I also did the kind where a person sprayed you at a salon - THAT WAS INTERESTING! Okay - cause you're BUCK naked standing in front of this woman, making idle chit chat while she sprays you!!! YEAH! Talk about trying to find your confidence! The problem I had with this was that it made me REALLY dark (like another nationality!) and I could shower for 24 hours (which was the same for the other I believe) but I was REALLY sticky! I didn't like it as much because I was SO sticky and dark! It looked good mind you - but just TOO much!
Hope that helped!

Yes it helps a lot. My cousin and I are thinking of doing the spray tan for the wedding, but I was curious about that one. We both heard that you have to hold your breath for about 90 seconds and as hard as we try, ( I mean u had to see us the other night sitting in my living room with a stop watch trying to hold our breaths what a sight LOL),we just cant do it. But we are still practising :) . That is the onlly thing holding us back right now..
As far as the other one where the person sprays you, that would never happen for me, I could never sit there naked in front of someone and discuss oh say the weather without totaly laughing.

Spray tans are very worthwhile when done by people who know what they're doing with them. May I recommend St Tropez as a very good brand too.
I am always amazed that magazines (latest one I read: Oxygen) still advocate the use of sun beds even though their overt dangers have not only been noted but also proven to trigger advanced skin damage and skin cancer.
A 'fake tan' is such a better alternative and a good salon won't charge you $$$ to get one either. Also, with additional products such as a good moisturiser, you can triple the life of your tan between touch ups.
If you're getting married, a practise run two months prior will give you a good idea as to how intense the colour will be, how long it lasts and whether or not you like it. I recommend taking pictures of yourself at this time in order to determine how this tan will look under the lens.
Hope this helps.

The first time I was in a Mystic Tan booth I almost panicked, I anticipated holding my breath but it was different onced I got in there and the spray hit me. And you can take a quick breath when the spray stops and you turn around to do your back, before the spray starts again. I think with the mystic you have to wait 6 to 8 hours before you shower.
Let us know how it works out for you!

I've tried it too. I think Mystic Tan is where I went.... can't remember though! The experience was fine, kinda fun really. I LOVED it at first. Went back to get another round about a week later b/c i was going on a trip and wanted it to last. BUT, I was worried about it breaking my skin out, as I am quite sensitive, esp. on my face. I told the woman that, and she assured me I was fine. But, after a few days, I started getting break outs, and with that second "tan" a week later, my skin FREAKED OUT . It ended up being so terrible that I swore it off for life. I like to go to the tanning bed now and then to get a glow before summer, and I never go in excess, so I'll probably just do that a few times in the late spring just before bathing suit season... then I don't worry about it. I wish I could've tolerated the "fake" tan b/c it looked great... but my face says no. I have to work hard to keep my skin very clear (use $ products and wash my face 2x a day with several steps of cleaner... which works, but I have to be religious about it), so maybe I'm an exception, but it did terrible things to my skin. Just an FYI! :D

If you are allergic to the self tanning stuff surely you would know it before now? I have a co-worker that can't touch the stuff.

I wasn't at all allergic to it, I just break out easily. I think Suzie was stating that in ref to my comments, but I'm not sure.....

You've GOT to be kidding! All the mag's I read (Cosmo, Allure, Elle, Self, etc.) WARN not to go to tanning beds! It's proven to cause skin cancer, and they've actually started a campaign in congress to enact legislation requiring states to MAKE tanning parlors put the warnings up. It's rediculous that a 13 year old can't drive a car, but they can go get a tanning membership that could cost her her life!
There's absolutely no such thing as a "safe" tan except a fake one and anyone who thinks there is hasn't known anyone with melanoma. It all seems great until you realize you're messing with your life! Sorry - this is a big thing to me... I wear 30 block in the sun and I still end up tanning regardless so I have trouble when people don't want to wear anything or go to tanning beds (and yes I'm a reformed fake baker myself.)
I'd do the Mystic for the wedding if I were you. You really don't have to hold your breath that long - and I thought it was the most "natural" looking. Plus, you could get more "frequent" sprays if you wanted a darker look. :)
