Usually when we go to a friend's house, we will bring a bottle of wine. This weekend we are going to our friends' house and they are TTC (or possibly even pregnant) so that obviously wouldn't be appropriate. Any ideas on what else we might bring them? They have lived in this house for about a year, but this is the first time we are seeing it...so it's not really a "housewarming" gift, but I guess it could be. The only thing I could think of was maybe a houseplant or flowers, but I'd love to hear some other ideas. Thanks in advance!

I like to take anything that fits in a cute basket! Like a pretty candle holder and some candles ... or a basket of cookies or other pastries that you can snack on while visiting.

Maybe a nice houseplant? A pretty vase? I'm a wine person too, so I'm just as clueless. :D

I like Jenn's idea of maybe a candle...
I made homemade bread and dip to go with it for a coworker when I went to see her house for the first time.....put it in a pretty little basket with a kitchen towel. She said she enjoyed that....

coasters
really awesome bath soaps
a great bottle of olive oil + a bread mix (in a foo foo basket)
linen cocktail napkins
picture frame (if you have a pic of them, put it in there)
the latest greatest cookbook (maybe Barefoot contesta lady)
If you are having dinner with them, bring an appitizer on a serving platter and they keep the serving platter or bring a decadent desert and boxed/wrapped/packaged desert plates. I love plates (I have tons of cocktail/appitizer/desert plates) so maybe appitizer plates, etc. (pottery barn has some neat ones that are packaged nicely).
Last time they were over, my parents brought us a wine cooler (that also could be used for other bottles) that you put in the freezer and then use. I love that and we use it all the time.
One of the "If" books (I think there are 3 now). They are great conversation starters (if you aren't familiar w/them, they have really thought provoking questions. Sometimes dh and I will crack open a bottle of wine and play the IF game all night!)

This is along the wine idea, but appropriate. We always get the sparkling grape juices since DH doesn't drink alcohol. Similar in thought, but OK for those TTC!
I like the idea of a candle basket, too. :)
The olive oil & bread idea is very nice since its a dinner & your first time to their home. The basket ideas would be nice too... what if you take the bread/gift basket & a bottle of vintage for them to keep until after the baby, too personal? maybe too expensive, not sure how well you know them.
good ideas so far

I know this was a while ago, but thought I'd share incase anyone cares.
I went to HomeGoods and Marshalls to look in their home department and searched for hours....literally. It was hard b/c 1) I have never been to their house so I had no idea what their decor was like, 2) they recently got married and got sooooooo much stuff that I honestly don't think they need ANYTHING and 3) my friend does not cook AT ALL and most of the "homegoods" type stuff revolves around the kitchen...so I finally decided screw this and went to Home Depot. I got them a beautiful blooming orchid plant and picked out a nice little planter/vase for it to go in. I figure that it's always best to give a gift that you like so I was really happy with that choice and will definitely give it again if the need arises. ;)
That is a really nice gift, orchids are so pretty. What was her reaction... I'm guessing she/they loved it??
