View Full Version : Hire a moving company or buff up??
Just wondering if anyone has ever hired a moving company & has some pos/neg feedback to offer. We're getting ready to move & live in a three-floor walk-up now, so we may just hire people to help us. Getting it all up here was a massive workout & it IS July in south florida here... :fmad: (not angry, just HOTTT)
Anyone have any experiences with this? Was it worth the $$? How much did it cost & how long did they take? What did you need to have ready or did they pack things for you? Did anything get damaged? thx ;)

When DH got a new job out here, the new company that he is working for moved us out here at no charge!!! It was SUCH a good thing! It would've cost us $3,000.00 (that was for moving 200 miles) if the company hadn't paid for us, but I seriously think it would've been worth it! They packed us up one day, and we moved the next! It would've been SO impossible for us to do it ourselves, because my Grandpa passed away, and his funeral was the day that the movers packed us up, so we just left a few instructions for them, and when we got home that night, it was done!!! We actually had to go to walmart to buy rags and some cleaning stuff so we could get the house cleaned up for the next renters! I can't imagine moving again without using a moving service! There are other options, they could just pack you up, or just drive the truck, or whatever, but having them do everything was just awesome!!! Hope this helps, sorry for the book!:D

Moving Companies can be so expensive! But worth it, if you don't want the hassle of doing all the grunt work yourself. They're usually really good at not breaking things, otherwise they wouldn't stay in business long!
We've always moved ourselves, because hubby is a bit tight about things like that! But I swear I'll never do it again!

Veda, make sure if you go this route, you get the estimate with packing materials, ect all included. I remember a few times on the news there where shady and unscrupulous moving companies were charging extra for packing materials that weren't included in the estimate, and we're not talking peanuts here. ;) Try to check them out as much as possible. I've moved a few times in SoFLo so I know what a bitch it can be. I say if its a lot of stuff and alot of stairs check into it, but make sure you go with a reputable company. ;)
Otherwise, do it in the early morning and get lots of help. ;)
Thanks guys... Mel, we'd definitely GET IT IN WRITING! And after assessing all of our crap & the estimated weight of each thing times the heat factor plus the bruises & scrapes from three flights of stairs, we're going to get some mover's estimates right away!!
thanks again for the insight, of course this is still an open thread :)

Hey remember that moving company that was holding peoples stuff hostage.
They would give an estimate, then tack on all kinds of expenses during the move, at the end the bill was outrageous, if you didn't pay they kept your stuff that was on the truck. I remember it happening a few years back, they ended up busting them and sending their asses to jail.
That's why I say to you, just make sure to check into all the costs. ;)
Good luck with the move, BTW...........still staying on the bay? Or are you moving inland?
I don't suppose you remember the name?? I guess we'll either have to enlist a few burly friends (is tommy into visiting your new miami friend?? haha) or pay a bit more for a reputable company. There are sooo many sketchy companies down here!! Maybe all big cities are like that, but DAMN! You hear about so many weird & crazy things everyday here! I moved here for the diversity of culture & attitudes but sometimes I still get surprised by the actions, yk??
We are wanting to stay east of 95 b'c after living close for so long I'd feel a bit like a fish out of water getting too far from the beach or bay. Funny, you know those pics I posted a few weeks ago of the bay that you lived near?? We've been finding several in our new price range (250-300K) right there by that bay area. Which is great b'c those areas are tagged with a high increase in value over the next few years. I guess the plan is to continue blocking the street entrances that lead directly to Biscayne (which is really picking up but still a bit seedy in areas as you know i'm sure!) then putting a gated entrance into the little "neighborhood". Sounds like a fab investment, but being first-timers, we're still looking at all options, trying not to get sucked in too quickly by the "pool, jacuzzi, a block from the bay... all in your range" etc. that we hear daily. Its rough to pass up though when you look at a house for what we can afford & the neighbor's remodeled home is going for twice the price! We're just in this for an investment & plan on fixing it up & selling in 3-5 years.
blah blah the girl can talk eh?? thank you for asking though!
