View Full Version : Betta fish help
I've had my betta fish for a year now. All of a sudden his stomach has inflated. He can't swim normally, his head is just bent upwards, and he sinks on his stomach. I thought I was feeding him too much so i started to feed him much less. But it has been about a week and a half now and he is still the same. I'm sad for him....I have no clue how I can help him. Anybody knows? I'm even afraid to change his water becuase I feel like i'm goin to hurt him. please help!!!!

Oh dear. Sounds like an air bladder problem. We had a Beta (rip) who had that as one of his many ailments. From what I understand, it is not necessarily fatal. The key thing is if he can still get to the top to get food.

This is about goldfish (the beta link I found won't work) but it might give you some ideas...

I just got my beta yesterday, it was a belated birthday present. It came in a vase with some kind of plant. The instructions say to change the water once a week using spring water at room temperature, and to feed the fish once a week. I know the giver changed the water this past weekend and I'm not sure when she last fed it, but I'm sure it's been a few days ago. In the past 24 hours I've read several sites that recommend feeding twice a day 3-5 pellets. The fish is beautiful, I would love to see it live through the remainder of the month. How often should I feed it? The last time I had fish (goldfish) was 4 years and my neighbors kept calling me a murderer. I would really like to be more successful this time around.

I used to feed mine 3 pellets twice a day. He lived for a little over a year (which is pretty good for a betta). Good luck with your new friend!

OK, now I have another question. I just fed my beta and he spit the food out. Any reason why? What should I feed him instead of the pellets?

i can answer that question for you
through my brillant idea was to have a betta at work... cool huh
well the first one (oscar) he died about 2 or 3 days after having him the second one (oscar the 2) only lived for 1 night
so now we have a third one which we named him fatty... well he eats anytime we put food in his bowl (which the other 2 never ate) so this one was spitting the pellets out... so i went and bought him some flakes for bettas and he love those... it says to feed it with the pellets but he wont touch the pellets maybe they are to hard for him

those darn betta vases again!*!
Make sure the fish can get up to the surface for air. make sure he doesn't get tangled in the roots and drown. They have to breathe air. Feed him every day just a couple of pellets
Why not use dechlorinated tap water? get the chemical that removes chlorine and chloramine.and sure he is warm enough.(74- 78)
My bettas fast one day a week and come to no harm. occasionally i give them a small piece of raw meat. My guys only spit the betta pellets out if they are too big for their mouths
