View Full Version : cat not eating as much

since peepers was a kitten (I've had him for almost 4 years) I have been giving him a small can of Iams wet cat food for 'dinner' every night. He grazes on Iams dry food at his leisure (there's always a bowl out). He almost always eats the entire bowl of wet food within an hour or so. For the past 3-4 days, he's just eaten a little bit of the wet, 'burries' it, and ignores it. He's still eating the dry and drinking plenty (he has 2 water bowls, and prefers to get a drink from the kitchen or bathroom sinks).
Do you think I should be concerned about the change in his eating? He hasn't acted differently and he's still using the litter box.

How old is he? Only 4? I really wouldn't worry unless he stops eating all together, stops drinking, and/or changes his litter habits. Maybe Mr. Peeps is feeling a bit under the weather. Just keep watching him and if you see any change, call the vet and bring him in. I know how it is to worry about your little guy so much, but it sounds like there probably isn't anything wrong with him. :)

yep C, he's 4. He usually really chows down when I put his food out -- maybe I'm just being paranoid

If your cat has a pretty usual eating habit and all of a sudden it has changed I would at least give his vet a call. I look at it this way if my kiddo all of a sudden had a loss of appetite I would call his doctor. But I think of my pets kinda like my kids!!! :D

Is your cat getting more inactive? Sometimes that will make them not eat as much. Well I am going how my dogs are. Also the weather changing effects their eating habits. Even the ones I keep in all the time. Just some ideas??

Mr Pepper's might be knowing the household is going to change soon.. Believe it or not, animals can sence when a baby is coming, and they can react in different ways.

I know when I was carring my son our dog drove me nuts. He was up my butt where ever I went. When I brought my son home, my dog just stopped eating. Then started using my bathmat as a toilet. After a little re-training, everything was fine, but animals know when something different is happening...;) ;)

Hmmm... as long as he's eating and drinking still and seems otherwise healthy... I wouldn't worry too much. I know my mom's cat also eats alot less in winter when she doesn't get as much exercise, so maybe Mr Peepers is a smart dude who knows his caloric needs.

Or maybe after 4 years he's just sick of it?:) Maybe a new flavour/brand would help?

Everyone, thanks for all the replies :)
I think Mr Peepers is just slowing down for winter. And Suzie, you may be onto something, he has been SO needy over the past month or so - he wants to sit in my lap all the time (this is mr. independant -- he's NOT a lap cat). I think he may know that he's not going to be the only baby in the house much longer!!
