Good Morning everyone! I have a quick question. I started my flower seeds the other day (huge blizzard, stuck inside with kids and wanting spring to arrive NOW). I put the seeds in my basement where it is cool but not cold, under a florescent light. Do they need to be have some heat on them to germinate or is the light enough (it is on usually about 14 hours a day, sometimes longer)

It may depend on the seeds you are germinating. Which are you trying to germinate?

If your interested, I started a thread a while back on Winter Sowing. Basically you are making mini greenhouses out of old soda bottles, milk jugs, ect, and sowing the seeds, then putting them outside, even in the snow. Its an interesting concept, and I am trying it out for the first time, I have everything from perennials to annuals, veggies, and herbs. The people who have done it swear by it. Here's the link if you wanna take a look:

Actually, seed don't need any light at all to germinate. Plants will only need light after the second set of true leaves. Here is a pic of some okra seed I sprouted between two layers of wet paper towels in a ziplock bag & placed them on top of the refrigerator to keep them warm. The seed began to sprout on the second day.
