I hope this doesn't come up on the main page! I swear I'm trying to figure this out!!!

Anyhow, moved into our brand-new home a year ago. Well water was tested and is AWESOME and clear. BUT.....after washing my towels in laundry soap, fabric softener and throwing fabric softener sheets in the dryer...they come out smelling and feeling wonderfully fresh. But after a few days sitting in the linen closet, they take on an awful oder, almost a "burnt" smell. What is going on? I've tried different detergents and such. But for a new house, why is it stinking up what's put on the shelves? I thought of putting up "stick ups" and shelf liners in the already "clean" closets. The clothes hanging in the closet aren't affected by this "odor". Any help will surely be appreciated! Oh and YES the clothes are COMPLETELY dry when I put them away. But I can't stand drying off with a stinky towel!!!! HELP!

Sounds like something is in the closet.

Try replacing the shelves in the closet, and also painting the walls inside the closet.

If they're wood shelves, sometimes they get wet and the smell never goes away, and it leaks into your towels or clothes or whatever comes into contact with them.

If replacing and painting is out of the budget, try just doing a really good deep cleaning of the closet. Maybe get some "stink good" sachets and placing them in the closet.

It may be just the paint that was used to paint the shelfs with.
I would go with Farmgirl and re-paint the shelfs or replace them..
Good luck :D

I would try the paint and what I do cause we seem to have a ton of towels is I put dryer sheets every few down the pile. I love the snuggle or bounce ones. Then I reuse them until all the smell is gone.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll try cleaning them again (both closets in both bathrooms and kitchen drawers). They are made of just plain wood. Maybe it's something they were "treated" with. I like the dryer sheet idea, put in the stack of towels.

I had the same problem. I painted the linen closets with enamel paint====

I also use the gel room deodorizers....one at the bottom of closet and one at top...to keep it fresh smelling.

Good Luck...
