Ever since I have known Tommy we have had an ongoing battle on dusting and vacuuming  Yeah, we lead very exciting lives.
I say it's best to dust AFTER you vacuum. I think vacuuming stirs up dust and it will settle right back on the furniture.
He says you should vacuum last after dusting so you can suck up any crumbs/dust/etc.. that may have fallen in the floor while dusting.
What do ya'll think?

I say you'll never end up agreeing, no matter what... LOL! Don and I are the same way, except I think like Tommy does and Don thinks like you do...
I say just, whoever is doing the housework at that time, to do it however they feel is correct--at least the housework is getting done (unlike my house)! :p

Basically if you think about it you are both correct. Research has recently indicated that every vacum cleaner omits a very fine dust that is actually quite damaging to your lungs. SO open your windows when you vacum. This being the case then this fine dust will be everywhere. If you dust first then yes crumbs and so on will land on the floor unless you are more careflu and catch them.
If you wish a vote I would say dust after with a damp cloth, or with polish ont he cloth. That keeps all the dust in the cloth and not on the floor and also catches that health risk of the very fine dust from your hoover.
A simple test to prove this theory. get 3 little squares of fine fabric like you would use in a filter. Put them over the tube connections of your cavum cleaner. Hoover your carpet the have a look at what you catch. The one furthest away from the floor will have very fine dust particals. These are the ones your vacum blows out and you breath in.
Food for thought!!!

I say get a Rainbow vacuum, then you don't have to worry about dust!

Dust bunnies! They multiply faster than you can keep up with them! I gave up! I vacuum weekly and dust monthly. I used to do both twice a week....then I had kids! I used to be a clean freak!! Everything HAD to be just "so". Threw that out the window after my second child.
We live in the country on a dirt road, so we're surrounded by dirt and dust. Rough on the old allergies, but that's the sacrifice we've made to live in the middle of the woods!:D DH has NEVER dusted in our 22 years together. And the last time he touched the vacuum was a month ago to clean out the furnace. It'll probably be another 6 months before he touches it again to "clean the furnace".

I think you're both right. I just do whatever whenever. Usually I don't have the motivation to dust and vacuum on the same day anyway. I figure if I get both done once a week then we're doing good... though I rarely get both done once a week. ;)

lol, I'm with Honey. It's a rare occasion that dusting and vacuuming would ever been done on the same day, much less the same week. The weird thing is, I actually enjoy cleaning once I get going, but it takes more motivation than you could ever imagine for me to even get started.

OMG!!! I thought I was the only person who thought that way!!!! ha! It's a little strange, but I'm kind of anal about the marks being perfectly proportioned, too.

Yep! Carpet marks say "CLEAN"! My mother taught us as kids to vacuum backwards out of each room, leaving nice, pattern lines. That way you don't put foot prints on them to ruin them. She wasn't anal...she cleaned offices and homes for a living. I still like the carpet marks, but don't see them much anymore. I vacuum as fast as possible and the kids are running around right after me! I too find "cleaning" positive therapy, WHEN I have the time, usually on the weekend when DH can entertain the kids for a few hours!

I dunno, but I always dusted first then vacumed, and as for the carpet marks, I LOVE THEM :D . But, I will also admit, as C said, it's rare that I dust & vacum on the same day, omg that's way to much for me LOL.....:D
