Spring is on it's way. I've been eyeing them for the last 5 years. They bloom beautifully every spring on the roadside...hundreds of them. Would it be illegal for me to dig a few of them up to transplant in my own yard? And when is a good time to dig them up? After their blooms die? I have 40 year old daffodils (from my parents yard) now growing. But I waited until the blooms died. I don't have a green thumb. Is this also true with tiger lillies?

Now I'm confused because I've read two things. One that tiger lilies hate to be transplanted and that what you are talking about aren't tiger lilies but ditch lilies, then I read tiger and pitch lilies are the same things. So I'm confused on that one.

I read to transplant soon after the flowering period has ended. Daylilies can be moved during the flowering period. It is best to trim the foliage to about 8” when transplanting.

As for the legalities, I guess it depends on where they are, that land has to belong to someone right? If not a private owner than the government. I don't know about digging up lilies that aren't yours so I won't comment there. ;)
