Home equity loans

Is anyone familiar with home equity loans? Has anyone taken one out to do work on their house? Any pros/cons you can think of?

We tried a a year or so ago after the mortgage company approached US. After we went thru all the paper work they said sorry you haven't lived there long enough. We've lived here almost 8 yrs. We didn't ask for the loan they said oh here let us help you...oops sorry never mind:rolleyes:
