View Full Version : Colors in a New Place

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and wanted to post a question to the group right away! I'm a college student and just got my first place--I'm sharing it with a few other people. To save money, I bought all my furniture off the person who lived in the room before me (a friend of mine). There's..and eclectic mix of furniture. Wooden Dresser, desk, book case, bed, and a white cabinet (low, going across one side of the room). The floor is wooden, and I dont' really think (I'm not there right now) that any of the wood is the same color. Having that to work with, I really hate plain white walls and want to paint the walls when I get there. Of course, I also need to get bedding and stuff, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a good color combination that would work with all the different color furniture? I also have some black-framed items. I simply don't have enough money to buy new matching furniture for the whole place. Obviously, a color that would open the room up is ideal. I could even do the whole 3 walls one color, 1 wall another color. Any ideas? I'm kind of clueless! Thanks a lot you guys!

Hi Kirk and Welcome! I'm guessing that you either don't want or don't have the time/money to paint the furniture all the same, so let's just assume that we need to go with everything "as is".
That having been said, why don't you just start out with a fresh coat of white on your ceiling and a taupe/beige (or if you don't like colors that are kind of warm in color go with a grey tone) on the walls. Since your floors are wood (good deal!) that would let you have nice clean and fresh walls as a neutral to start with and then you can put any colors you want in there for couches, pillows, chairs, bedding and lamps. Plus you can put any funky artwork you want up (really bright colors if you like that) in the black frames and that will let you also use whatever colors you want.
If you pick your wall color first, you're going to limit what you can buy to put in there. But if you do something neutral on your walls, you can look for sale stuff that's still totally cool but hopefully save some money and get even more stuff that really makes the place YOURS!!!
What do you think? Ask me any questions you want and I'll be glad to answer. And good luck! But definitely get a nice clean new coating on your walls and ceilings... you know your dirt is fine - but someone else's is just gross!:gag:
Is there anyway you can take pics? That would be even more helpful. You could always just pick out what ever colors you like and go with furnature covers. :)
