Vacuuming throw rugs

Does anyone know of a good way to vacuum a small throw rug (like a bathroom rug) without the thing getting sucked all up into the stupid vacuum cleaner?

I have a small dirt devil that I use, but usually I shake them outside or for a good cleaning wash them in the washing machine.

I shake them, then run the vacuum over them while my foot is on the edge of the rug. Some of the rugs have to have the vacuum on the lower speed to work.

Phooey. B said most people just shake/beat them. I'm not coordinated enough to do the foot thing. Well, I am....it's just laziness. I was hoping there'd be some cool thing I'd never thought of.
