View Full Version : To fix or not to fix?

We have an old house, and it has an adjacent shed. There is a door that goes into the shed, and in the shed are stairs that lead to the basement. This shed is falling apart, it's an eyesoar and it's not insulated (we live in Canada).

We plan to move in a couple of years, but we are unsure of whether fixing this shed (it might have to be rebuilt) would be a waste of money, or if it would increase property value enough to make it worth the trouble.

To rebuild it could cost over $10k, but I don't know if it would ad that much to the value of the house.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't think it's worth it to spend the $10K to rebuild the shed. Have you gotten any estimates on just fixing the existing shed? Maybe speak to a local realtor and find out their opinion regarding the resale value too.

Thanks,

A friend/Architect is comming over tomorrow to tell us what he thinks can be done.

The problem is that my husband thinks it would be a waist of money. That fixing it wouldn't really increase the properties value. I'm not so sure about that. Having to put on your coat in winter to do the laundry is not a very good selling point, I think. Plus it could become a pantry (house doesn't really have one now).

I don't know much about construction or real estate, so as far as I know my hubby is right.
