I recently found this information, and some of it was new to me as well, so I wanted to share. Hope it helps some of you. (P.S. I'm sure this most likely applies, in part, to cats as well.)

1. Large Breed Adult foods. GIMMICK. Your dog should already be full grown if feeding an adult food. Why do you need to feed a LB adult food? For the Glucosamine/Chrondritin in it? (See that entry below) I think Large Breed puppy foods are a good idea, but I feel the LB adult is a marketing gimmick. Most of them have more fillers in it. Pass this one by.

2. Glucosamine/Chrondritin in a food. GIMMICK. The G/C levels in most foods aren't theraputic. They don't help. They can't hurt, but certainly won't help. You're better off adding your own G/C.

3. Dental/Teeth cleaning formulas. Mostly GIMMICK. Oh please. Dogs don't chew anyway. How can a food keep the teeth clean? If you eat a bunch of crackers are your teeth cleaner? Use common sense here and don't rely only on the food to keep your dog's teeth clean. The best thing for your dog's teeth is a raw bone.

I will say that some of the newer diets coming out like Eukanuba foods with Dental Defense and the Royal Canin Labrador food might actually help. The pieces are larger in the RC Labrador food so the dog actually has to chew. These foods actually show promise in the fight against dog tarter.

4. Lite/Diet formulas. GIMMICK. Do you want to totally ruin your dog's coat? Feed a lite or diet formula. They are filled with fillers. That's how they keep the fat and protein levels down. Instead of feeding a lite or diet formula, cut back on the regular formula and add Green Beans to the food. You can use canned, fresh or frozen. If you use canned, please try to get the sodium-free. If you can't get the sodium-free, then make sure you drain and rinse the beans thoroughly before giving them in your dog's food. Try a 1/2 can of beans per feeding to help cut back the dog's weight.

My two JRT's were just altered 6 mo. ago. Odo was 9-10 lb's and is now 17 lb's. Odie was 13 lb's and is now 21 lb's. I called a vet today to ask about a diet for them and she recomended low cal. formula?? I was all set to go and buy it till i read what you had to say. Now i am really confused  . I want to do the best thing for them. They are my kids and i don't want to harm them with the wrong dission. My question is: what are the green beans for(is it just a filler) They already only get 3/4 cup a day, divided by 2 meals. and that is according to what they weigh now it will be less if i go by what they are supposed to weigh. They are acting like they are starving!!!! Can't stand it. Want to feed them till they are happy, but love them and want them to be healthy....What to do??????? Maybe you could post a link if there is more info on what you found.

I use a dog food that is call PHD. It is all organic and Holistic. It is great stuff My mother is a breeder, and swears by this stuff. All her dogs act like puppies and none of them are over weight! I also use the supplements off the web site.

Does your mother get the dog food from her vet? We have a Holistic vet up the road from us and i think i am going to check with them on dog food. Every one i hear from say's that their dogs act more like puppies when on these diets.

Sorry I just now saw this. All I can tell you is what I've read and what my vet and every breeder and other "specialists" have told me. They suggest using the green beens and/or rice as filler so that you're not just giving them the junk in the food. My Coco is overweight a little and I had switched her to lo-cal food and I can definitely tell that her coat is NOT as shiney as it was... and I can't tell that she's lost a darn thing.

I'm like you, my animals are my babies and she DEFINIETLY acts like she's starving (but that's normal for her - she likes to eat! LOL) Restricting the intake is what I've been trying to do - and restricting the number of TREATS my husband gives her! (He's SUCH a sucker - plus we're training our new boy Gabby and he thinks if Gabby gets a treat... so should Coco!)

Anyway - good luck!

Well it has been really hard but i have cut their food back now for a few days. I think i am having a bigger problem than they are...lol...Tough love.

Turtleheadfred , I am trying the green beans and the rice..they are getting 3/4 cup of Iams a day.We have used that food for 5 years. I split it into two feedings a day...Now what would be the limit for the green beans or rice in each feeding (note 1/2 of the 3/4 cup twice a day). By the way i found some green beans without salt at the store today..

yonksgirl, I think sence we have used this food for so long i hate to change them. So i think i will waite till this bag is gone (it is a large bag) and see how this plan works on their weight loss. Then if they don't loose some weight i will then try the phd...

Thanks for all your help.

"Try a 1/2 can of beans per feeding to help cut back the dog's weight."

Around 2 1/2 Cups per day of dry dog food (divided between two feedings) is what's generally recommended by breeders for full grown females over 55 pounds in weight. Be sure to moisten it with tepid water to help with digestions... but don't let it soak. Just put in about 1/2 cup per serving and that will help cut back on bloat for your babies.

Hope that helps. I've always used IAMS too, but recently switched to Nutro to see if it would help bring my girl's coat back to life...

Good luck!
