Water features?

I want to add a water feature this year to our back patio. I don't know if I want a gold fish pond or just a fountain...any ideas?

Hmmm... both would be lovely... but I am inclined to choose a fountain. It will sound pretty and it won't be standing water that would attract misquitoes and their larvae.

You can get a nice fountain with a large enough collection pool (lowest level) to hold 2-3 goldfish. Thats the best of both worlds.

That's what a friend of mine did - and it was truly great! Do you have room for that? It would be really cool!

I'd love to do something like that... but I know keeping 2 labs out of the water would be IMPOSSIBLE!!! Don't think the fishies would like that!

We've had our pond since before the kids were born. I never had a problem with the kids getting into the water (or harassing the fish) and we have a rather large collecting pool (4-5 feet across but only about a foot deep in the center, f that). Although, the dogs have a habit of thinking its their water dish & drinking out of it.

I've found that if I get the kids involved they tend to respect it better. They help me weed/plant flowers. They also help feed the fish each day. I've even heard them telling other kids not to play in the water and show them how to sit on the bgord blocks & watch the fish (thats what I taught them to do if they wanted to "play" with the fish).

Katy - you're VERY smart to teach the kids to "play" with the fish that way!

LOVE IT.
