Spring cleaning

WEll I've spent most of the weekend cleaning up outside. Yesterday morning I participated in the city's spring park cleam-up event & then today I spent most of the afternoon cleaning up our backyard & getting the summer toys out.

Hubby & I discussed some changes we each want to do this year with the different garden areas. I am thinking tomorrow after we go to my nephew's birthday party we'll swing by Hope Depot (its right next door to were we'll be). I need to get some hard plastic edging, weed barrier & a few new plants. I think next weekend I'll start looking for some water plants.

Most of my "spring cleaning" has been inside... but I have worked on a "few" garden/flower beds. Still have more to do!

We went by Lowes tonight (I got a coupon for $10 off $50 purchase or more). Picked up about 1/2 the plants I need, some potting soil for my new pot, much needed edging & some crab grass killer.

I still need, 1-2 more plants for my front pots, some filler for the front of my pond as well as a nice canna lily for my new pot (I've been dreaming of that since the other one I had died off since I didn't dig it up for winter).

Well I got the plants to finish off my front pots. I decided to continue a bit with my herbs around the pond. Since we put it together I've had spearmint, peppermint & lavender around it; I bought some sage to go in front (it has nice color variations & was already trailing, I'm hoping it will creep nicely along the front border.

Now we just need to get some fill dirt to raise up the rock garden level, get a second pot (to balance) & a couple canna lilies. Then I can get started on the vegitable garden.

Oooh that sounds great! I love herbs in a garden... plant them just because I like the feel and look of them too!

My spearmint is HUGE already, as is my camint, lavender (not so big), and the beebalm is growing in spurts too!

(Of course one of the dogs dug up my basil, corriander, cilantro and oregano!!!)

Well we have had a frost the last 2 nights so I haven't bothered to plant anything just yet. I am not good at remembering to cover things up...well until I am listening to the weather report and they say oh we had a frost last night and then I hit my head

Once I uncover my pond from the winter I don't cover anything until I cover it back up for the next winter. I want plants that I don't have to fret about (I got enough going on to remember to cover plants). If a plant dies off I just replace it with something else (I figure it wasn't meant to be in my garden). The majority of my plants have lasted for a couple years now. I typically replace 1-3 plants each spring because they didn't come back (all in the same areas). Thats partially why I decided to go with another herb in one of those areas, my herbs have not done me wrong.

Keep a close eye on your spearmint, they are VERY invassive (in case you didn't know). I just added some edging around mine to keep it fomr creeping into my other plant areas. I usually have to prune it (sideways, not tops) once a week if not more. Chocolate isn't as invassive because the growth is on top of the soil so its easy to see & cut (spearmint digs down a couple inches).
