In-floor heating? - General House & Home

We are new to this type of heating ... how exactly do you use this type of heating? Do you leave the temp at a constant comfortable temperature, or is it prudent (for the sake of the energy bill) to lower the temp at night?

Meliz, are you doing this under tile in the bathroom? I'm not sure the type you've gotten...

Ha me neither! It's throughout the entire house we are renting... most of the place has laminate flooring, but the foyer and second bath are tile (stone of some sort)... we aren't sure how we should be using it.... we are used to baseboard heaters and adjusting the heat by turning it down at night when we are out.. someone told me, though, you leave it constant when you have infloor heating. We don't want to waste electricity/cost our landlord a bomb in heat, so we are trying to figure out what is the most efficient way to handle this type of heating... constant room temp or should we adjust it?

my aunt has it and they keep it at a constant temp. Except summer of course. I think around 70. She has M.S. so she can't tolerate it too cold. Its nice to walk around on concrete and its warm.

I'm honestly not sure. But I know that for most systems (central, or whatever) they generally tell you keeping a constant temperature (whether cool or warm) is easier on your systems than trying to cool it off once it gets too warm, or trying to warm it up after it gets too cool!

We do keep our heat a LITTLE lower in the day because we're up doing stuff and it can be too much when you're dressed and up "juneing around" as my mother would say! But at night, we only raise it a degree or two and that seems to be just fine. Plus we have a matress warmer for the bed and two labradors keep us toasty (and crowded) too!

my dad has always said - regardless of warm or cool - that it is better to keep the temperature constant. Something about having to get the cool/warm 'reved up' is not as efficient as having a constant temp.

My grandpa was a heating/air conditioning repair man in Chicago, so I think my dad may have been influenced by that.
