Vitamin D
Did you all hear the news about Vit D? TAKE IT! There is now very strong evidence that it wards off cancer.
Vitamin D lowers cancer risk in older women: study
The study was of older women, but there is every liklihood that it will benefit all. In fact, the Canadian Cancer Society is now advising adults to take Vit D supplements, and they do not make such reccommendations lightly.

Someone recently told me that there were long suspiscions of this, but that studies were blocked-- by cancer drug companies. Not sure if this is true (tho my source is reliable), but who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory. Plus aren't drug companies the new pop culture villians?

It's almost Ironic that you post this. I have recently been diagnoased with Osteoporosis and It's really bad for my age, so the Dr was immediately going to start me on the Forteo shot but I asked for a second opinion and the dr referred me to a specialist, well the specialist took 6 tubes of blooed to test me for everything before we act on what to do. It turns out I am extremely vitamin D deficient, so we are doing an 8 weeks regimen of 50,000 IU's of vit.D a week and if my Vit D is up to where it's supposed to be, then I have to start taking the Forteo shot.
I suffer from Chronic constipation so I fully believe that I am not absorbing nutrition, and being that I have been suffering for years from this condition I believe it has significantly contributed to my Osteoporosis, along with the fact I had a full hysterectomy 10 years ago and I have not taken estrogen in 8 years.
We'll see how the Vit. D helps. I'll let ya know.

Wow, P, that's too bad! Coincidentally, I just heard a call in radio show about osteoprosis yesterday and was going to update this thread by mentioning how Vit D is good for that too. I hope you can find some treatments that help you.
Incidentally there was alot of talk about Forteo on this call-in-- apaprently there was a study a while back that said it can cause a jaw bone to "die" and people were very scared to use it for a while there... Anyhoo, the specialist on this program said that the risk of this was very minimal and that the benefits of Forteo hugely hugely outweighs the small risk. So if that was a concern of yours, be at ease. They pushed this website on this show, you might find it useful. Bless your heart Paragon! I hope this helps!
Just for those who aren't in that stage yet, but want to take something for Osteoporosis prevention, I have been told that whatever calcium supplements taken should be taken on an EMPTY stomach, or else they aren't properly absorbed. That many times women are taking calcium, but with meals or along with other medicines, and it interferes with the absorbtion of the calcium, so basically they're taking the pills - but not getting any of the benefits!
Just thought I'd throw that in there!

Thank you Meliz for the website, I will check it out real soon. So far it has been told to me that all of the drugs that actually work for Osteoporosis have been known to rot the jaw bone. Very scary, I am scared sick about it sometimes.
Turtlehead, that is something I have never heard before, that is extremely valuable information to have! Thank you.

Meliz, thanks again, that site does have some very valuable information.
Turtlehead, I tried to take the calcium on an empty stomach and it seems my body wants to reject it soon after. I've tried the "Bone up" and "Oscal Ultra" and both make me ill, although the Bone up is so much worse
I have been trying to take them and eat within 20 minutes, I don't have much problem there. The Dr. did tell me that calcium that contains carbonates will make me sick if I have an empty stomach.
It's all trial and error, but on the upside, I haven't smoked in well over three years (not that it has much to do w/this)
What I hate the most is that I am not supposed to drink alcohol at all with this I don't drink much, but when I go to dinner with friends, I want to have at least two

Paragon... what about if you take it RIGHT before you go to bed? I don't know, but wondered if you were asleep... if maybe you wouldn't "notice" it bothering your tummy - or if that would be an option. Just something you might want to ask your doctor. And I believe I DO remember that it's nothing within 30 minutes of calcium...
Didn't know it would upset your stomach though... NOT good! Hope it gets better!

I wanted to come back and let ya'll know what has went on.
I had to take the Vitamin D for 20 weeks before it started showing up in my system, but as soon as it got up to 31 (it's supposed to be anywhere between 30 and 60 to be beneficial) I was able to start the shot, (YAY!) I have been taking it for about a month and a half now and I will be doing it for two years, I have serious high hopes that it does what it's supposed too. I am so greatful I'm not a diabetic, I HATE these shots!!
I still can't believe all of this, it's surreal, how can you go forever without vitamin D and not know it? I really feel that everyone should be tested for it, it very well could save your bones among many other things.
I have never been snow skiing and I have always wanted too, so when my bones are strong again, that is the first thing we are going to go do, it may be my only opportunity.
I will update y'all as soon as I get another bone scan, which likely won't be for another year.

How much is the recommended dose of Vitamin D? Should you check with your doctor? I am always scared of drug interactions but does it matter with vitamins?

Heather - I just got my new "Prevention" magazine (YES - I'm old enough for that) and it's talking about Vitamin D... let me see if it has a recommended dosage...
