Oven Meatball Dinner

total classic from my mom. In fact, my recipe card calls this:

Mom's Oven Meatball Dinner

1 1/4 lb ground beef or turkey
1 small onion, minced
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp chili powder
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups dry red wine
1/4 cup flour
1 8 oz can tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp pepper
4 small potatoes, peeled and halved
4 carrots peeled and quartered (or a handful of baby carrots)
2 medium onions, quartered
============================
sautee onion, place it in a bowl. add meat through eggs, plus 1/2 cup of the wine and mix together. Shape into 8 meatballs. Roll each one in flour. Save reserved flour.
Brown the meatballs. Place them in a casserole dish. Stir reserved flour into drippings in the pa. Add the remainder of the wine through the pepper. Cook until thick. Add veggies to casserole dish. Pour gravy on top. Cook at 350 for 45-60 minutes.

She always served with:
Noodles Romanoff (you could just serve with the veggies and some crusty bread too. See, this is why I have hips )

8 oz noodles of your choice
8 oz cottage cheese
8 oz sour cream
1/2 cup parm
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp worsteschire

cook noodles, drain. Mix with the remainder of the ingredients. Place in a casserole dish and cook at 350 for 30 min

ok quick question - I just noticed it says at the top one small onion and then at the bottom it says two medium onions. is that a typo?

The small minced onion is mixed into the meatballs. Then, the two other onions are for the 'stew' part (potatoes, carrots and onions). If that's too miuch onion flavor (it wasn't for me) than just omit a portion.

Wow!!!! I made this tonight. The whole shabang - noodles romanoff too. It was fantastic! It was a TON of work, but totally delicious. Definitely more of a "holiday" meal though. It was too much work for me on a normal day.

Oh, I'm glad you tried it and liked it. Yeah, I should have mentioned that it takes a bit of time.
I have a crockpot recipe for meatball stew - it is similar and MUCH easier (I buy frozen turkey meatballs). I'll post in a sec...
