Kid friendly recipes

Since our kids are starting to get out of school, why not cook with them. It will give them a chance to learn and try new foods and a time for you to bond with them.
Post your recipes here.

Pretty much anything can be cooked with children helping you in the kitchen! What you cook obviously depends on your family's likes and dislikes. Your kids can help with various tasks depending on their age, and older kids can even be in charge of making a whole meal - including planning, shopping & time management (so all the food will be ready at the same time). Kids of just about any age can mix, pour, wash, use the blender/food processor, crack eggs, measure, knead dough, stir, and of course, TASTE!

Here are some ideas for things to make:
chili & cornbread
pasta salad
pita sandwiches
fruit salad
tuna/chicken/egg salad
omelettes (everybody can choose their own filling)
mac & cheese (homemade!)
lasagna
stir fry & brown rice
sandwich wraps or roll-ups
guacamole
california rolls, cooked sushi
muffins (can make healthy ones with zucchini & carrots & other veggies)
trail mix/granola
soups/stews
whole grain bread
pizza from scratch

Jana that is so true!! My son's love to help me in the kitchen. I made hamburgers the other night and we decided to "experiment" with them. I added some italian breadcrumbs, a little bit of milk and some garlic powder..... they were so good!!! But I had my younger son mixing the meat with his hand because he loved the feel of the "squishiness" He bragged to everyone about him making dinner.
I'll look and see if I can find some recipes!!!

Since my SS has not cooked much other then here, I give him cookbooks to look through. That gives him a chance to learn how to read measurements, ask me questions about ingredients that he doesn't know about, try to figure out if we can make the recipe that he wants to make based upon the ingredients that we have at home....so that is a great learning experience for him.

I will post some recipes later today.

Here are some recipes from my daughters cookbook for your kids to try-

Chocolate Mousse

6 1/2 oz. dark chocolate, broken into pieces
2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup cream
4 egg whites
3 Tbsp. sugar

Place the chocolate, butter and cream in a saucepan over very low heat. Stir until the chocolate has melted, then take it off the heat and pour it into a large bowl to cool.
Put the egg whites in the bowl and with an electric mixer beat it until light and foamy. Sprinkle with the sugar and beat until th egg whites has peaks that stand up, be careful not to overbeat it.
Fold the egg white into the chocolate mixture with a metal spoon, being careful not to stir out the air. Spoon the mousse into glasses and refrigerate until firm.

Serves 4

Garlic, Herb, and Cheese Breads
4 long buns or small baguettes

Garlic butter-
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 Tbsp. butter, softened

Herb butter-
2 tsp. mixed dried herbs
3 Tbsp. butter, softened

Chessy butter-
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
2 Tbsp. butter, softened

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slice the bread all the way along, but without cutting all the way through it.
To make the different butters, place the garlic and butter, herbs and butter and cheese, and butter in seperate bowls and mix well. Spread the butter into the cuts in the bread.
Wrap the bread in aluminum foil an put on a baking tray. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes so that the butter melts and the bread is warm.

Serves 4-6.

Coconut Macaroons
2 egg whites
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups dried coconut

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
Place the egg whites, sugar and coconut in a bowl and mix together. Press 2 tablespoons of mixture into a ball and put on the baking tray. Do the same with the rest of the mixture.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the macaroons are just starting to brown. Cool on the trays before serving.

Makes 14 cookies.
