Kitchen cabinets

Just curious what is your personal preference for kitchen cabinets - do you like light or dark colored cabinets?

we currently have dark cabinets - they are birch wood but have a cherry/cinnamon stain. I love they way they look with our contertops (we have black granite). When we were making the selections for our house, we wanted an even darker stain - almost chocolate, but it wasn't an option (the builder only gave about 12 stain choices). Had we chosen a darker stain, we would have gone with lighter countertops (more oatmeal). Our cabinets go well with our overall theme of our house (we wanted a sort of 'Tuscan' look) but I also love the way that white wood cabinets look with fresh, cool colors. I would love to do a kitchen in white cabs with glass panels in some of the doors, and then a lot of fresh green colors on the walls, almost like an herb garden.
Two totally different looks, but I like both

For me - it depends on the kitchen!

That may sound wierd, but right now, my kitchen has WHITE cabinets, and I know it wouldn't look right with anything else.

But now if I was going to BUILD a home and put in anything I wanted (price not being an option) I would go with a light to medium oak. I don't care for really dark cabinets - but generally prefer something more of a natural oak... but again, it would depend on the entire house and decor.

My dream kitchen has white cabinets(with glass doors) white crown molding, tile flooring and a light blue wall color. You know almost a beachy feel. I like light and airy.

I agree with THF, it depends on the kitchen. And the "feel" you're going for.

I love dark cabinets with rich granite countertops and stainless appliances. White cabinets look great with more airy, country or beachy feeling rooms. And light cabinets have a more modern feel to me.

So, I like each of them in their own way.

Mine are a light oak stain, but I would really prefer white. I'm more into painted wood than DH though, so if we built our next home I'm not sure what I would end up with.

I am trying to choose cupboards for our kitchen. This is the situation.....We want to cheaply fix up our house and possible sell it and get a bigger house. The thing is I don't want to dump a load of money into this one only to sell it. I don't have a ton to spend. I did see some nice ones at Lowes. I know if I put in money I would get it out in resale value but the problem is my home is an older doublewide. So over the last 11 years we have remodeled each room with the kitchen being the last room. But its still a double wide so I have to keep the decor and furnishings suitable.I saw a beautiful white set and was wondering what color for countertops. Granite is out of the question. I love it but have to go with laminate. They had a cool kitchen set up that had a deep green countertop with the white cupboards. It looked fresh.

I'm exploring options now as far as kitchen (even though I won't get to it next year). I too am liking the green and white fresh look, problem is I currently have white cabinets and they are so hard to keep clean. But I have a south facing room too. I was thinking a warmer color would work, like a soft yellow. I'm really open for options and been raiding rate my space on HGTV all day for ideas.

I like the natural look for the cabnets. I guess the ones we are getting will be light, but with the natural look it varies. We are going with a natural maple.

I think dark wood, and minimalist... I used to hate minimalism but now I love it, it makes everything look cleaner, but it's true it depends on your kitchen, how much light you have, how much place you have....

If it's small and dark then maybe light colors would be better to make it look lighter and bigger.

Hi Strawberry! That is so funny because I too, used to HATE minimalism - but now I'm sort of drawn to it! Even though I collect things of family significance and with history - I'm truly working on clearing out anything that isn't "truly" an heirloom - which is very hard.

I really like clean lines now - where I didn't before. Maybe it has to do with having to clean it?!

I just cleared out all the froo froo from the kitchen and it really looks so much more open and clean. I think I may be leaning more towards the minimalist look.
